A study is given of the characters of generic chemical structures used by the chemist and by the patent agent in pharmacy patents to fulfill the task of using computer to describe, store and search the chemical structure. Based on the representation of generic chemical structure called Generic Structure Compact Connection Table (GSCCT), a strategy is presented for screening generic chemical structure that is screening the stem ring nodes which is abstracted from GSCCT, which is automatically conducted from the graph file of the generic chemical structure by computer. This screening approach is made on the compact node level, which is different from the traditional search method of atom-by-atom. In order to avoid enumeration of the compounds, which will cause components explosion, the stem ring node structure information or as finger print information is used as screens. We use Access 2000 to establish a database of pharmacy patent in which includes the topic and catalog information and the generic chemical structure information. Use Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 to produce the searching program as well. A testing pharmacy patent's generic chemical structure searching system is developed. It provides two ways of screening the generic chemical structure by the stem ring nodes structure information.
