Microstrip patch antenna has been wildly used because of its own advantages, such as: low profile, light weight, easy fabrication, conformability to mounting hosts. But, with the increased demands of antenna quality for different purposes, owing to its limits, such as: narrow bandwidth, common microstrip patch antenna is hard to meet the requirements of engineering. So, broad-band microstrip patch antenna received more and more attentions, but it has more difficulty than common microstrip patch antenna in engineering design. This inevitably create a problem: how to ensure the precision and reduce the design cost.Basic principles of finite-difference time-domain method, artificial neural network model and genetic algorithm were introduced in this paper, and computer programs were developed. Three methods have been combined to solve the engineering problem of microstrip patch antenna. This approach was validated by the results of experiment.Effective approach of engineering optimized design of microstrip patch antenna, and useful practices of reducing the design cost were provided.
