In this thesis, wideband and dual-band dual-polarized microstrip antennas are studied. First, some numerical analysis methods, such as Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD), Finite Element (FE), Method of Moment (MOM), are introduced. Two kinds of electromagnetic software, Ansoft HFSS and IE3D, are also presented.Based on the discussion of the numerical analysis methods, the wideband and dual-band dual-polarized microstrip antennas are studied, and several antenna configurations with good performance are proposed. With regard to the wideband microstrip antennas, we improve the generic aperture-coupled microstrip antenna with H-shaped coupling slot. Two wideband antenna structures are presented, which are simulated and designed by FDTD. Calculated and measured results show that the aperture-coupled microstrip antenna with modified H-shaped coupling slot improves input impedance and bandwidth performance. Concerning dual-band dual polarized microstrip antennas, two antenna structures are adopted. One is an aperture-coupled microstrip antenna with the cross-shaped coupling slots, and the other is a microstrip dipole antenna. We simulate and design these two antennas by Ansoft HFSS software. The measured results indicate that both of these two kinds of antennas realize dual-band (GSM and DCS bands) and dual-polarized (horizontal and vertical polarization) performance, and achieve the design goal.We finally conclude the research of this thesis with an outlook for the further research.
