Still digital image processing is one of the most important components of Information Technology, especially of multimedia technology. Accompanying with the continual increase of multimedia applications, the requirements on multimedia technologies are also mounted up. In many fields, such as Internet, color facsimile, printing, scanning, digital photography, remote sensing, mobile applications, medical imagery, digital library and E-commerce, there are more and more excessive demands on still image processing. Still digital image compression requires higher performance as well as new features. To address all these requirements, a new compression and coding standard-JPEG 2000 is currently being developed.JPEG 2000 is the latest still-image compression and coding standard at present. The theme of this paper is based on the new feature of JPEG 2000 and the new technique used in it. This paper introduces the origin of JPEG 2000, JPEG 2000 itself and its application background as well as the still-image compression and coding system. JPEG 2000 standard is thoroughly analyzed in this paper. The features of JPEG 2000 such as region of interest coding, random access and progressive transmission are discussed in this paper. According to the description of FCD 15444-1, a J2K coding model is put forward. That is the innovation aspect of this paper. Processes in the model such as discrete wavelet transform, quantization, arithmetic entropy coding, tiling etc are analyzed. The J2K coding model is also fulfilled in this paper. This realization is of practicality value.None of the current still-image compression and coding standards can match all the new requirements of image processing, such as compression, ROI coding, robustness, different types of still images, interactivity, security, expansion and open architecture. However, by using new techniques and depending on its new features, JPEG 2000 can address all the needs. That is the purport of this theme. This paper compares the set of features offered by JPEG 2000, versus the current still-image compression and coding standards. The study concentrates on the aspects such as functions, lossy and lossless compression efficiency, Region of Interest coding, error resilience and complexity. As a result, a conclusion-how to choose compression and coding standard is elicited. At the end of this paper, further work is brought forward. And prospect on JPEG 2000 is also set out.
