Due to wavelet transforms efficiently overcoming the limitations of Fourier transform in dealing with unstable and complicated signal, they are popular in image compression and signal processing. Based on summarizing the wavelet-based image compression techniques for the last decades, this paper thoroughly researches the application of wavelet analysis to still image data compression. After study and research the key tool to the construction of second generation wavelet and the skill to realize integer wavelet transforms, the author utilize it into lossless image compression , discussed some questions about IWT and a lossless integer wavelet image compression based on enlarged image pixel is presented. After a thorough analysis of the region of interest coding in JPEG2000, aiming at the detects of it, an improved embedding zero tree wavelet algorithm based on area significance are proposed. Reconstructed image with a high compressive rate can still hold fairly good subjective quality; By utilizing zero-tree coding' s idea in VQ, based on region of interest(ROI) ,a wavelet image coding method using vector quantization is presented . The experimental results are appreciated.
