With the broad application of multimedia technology, the classical image compression technology can not satisfy the people's demands, the appearance of more high-powered image compression technology becomes the instant expectation for the people. The improved technology of image compression not only needs to realize high compression rate and the high fidelity, but also should satisfy the needs of network application such as gradual transport.The image compression technology is the main object of research in this article. The aim of image compression is to express image using the least bits, and to keep the quality of image at the same time to make it accord with the special application occasion. This article mainly discussed the theory, the methods, the foreground, the advantage and disadvantage of existing image compression. It mainly researched the representational classical compression arithmetic such as Run-Length Encoding, Shannnon coding, Huffman coding, Arithmetic coding, forecast coding, DCT coding, wave transform coding and so on. This article emphasized on introducing the standardization history of JPEG and researched on the algorithmic basic theory of JPEG, and analyzed the DCT transform, measurement, entropy coding, and the theory and function of Huffman coding, and it also used the MATLAB programmable language to simulate the JPEG arithmetic, as a result we can get a high quality compressed image, and at the same time compared the different effect of different compression ratio.Although the JPEG compression technology already has been used broadly, the JPEG compression arithmetic have defect in some aspects, for example, the JPEG arithmetic produced the diamonds effect, and it influenced the vision effect of decoding image badly. The main reason is the DCT transform lose too many high frequency information, besides the coding and decoding time is long and the running speed is slow, so in this article we try to improve it. The main method is to replace the DCT module in JPEG arithmetic with wave transform, and realized corresponding arithmetic by programming. The result of the experiment indicates that the scheme in this article can produce excellent visual effect, Finally, it summarized the whole article and the individual work, including the prospect of the future work.
