The Digital Signal Processor (DSP) is a type of microprocessor - which has unbelievable run speed and powerful functions. DSP is unique because it processes data in real time. It can help people to realize a wide variety of goals: filtering, speech recognition, image processing, data compression, neural networks, and much more. DSP is one of the most powerful information technologies in the twenty-first century. Because of recent developments in hardware technology, digital signal processing is fast becoming one of the most important research and developmet domain in electronics engineering. In the many consumer products including mobile phones, CD players, minidisks and hearing aids etc, all now contain one or more digital signal processing devices. It is the continued improvement in the bangs/buck ratio (ie. The power/cost ratio) that has enabled DSP technology to pervade the consumer market. A hardware system based on a Digital Signal Processor for Electronic Reading and Translating Pen project is proposed in this paper. Some unique features in this system are listed as follows:1. Normally, in order to link a camera which is used to capture image, hardware system need to add a special capturing circuit and a RAM chip. In this paper, we present a new method with which we only use a DSP to complete an interface with the digital camera directly. This method makes the capturing part to be the simplest one and it is also effective to reduce the volume of the whole system.2. In other hardware system, the flash chip generally is only used to execute reading operation. But, in our hardware system, the flash chip is not only to be used to complete the reading operation but also to be used to complete writing operations by using DSP. So it will be convenient to update the DSP software and system data in the future.3. For appending a USB interface, people normally add an individual processor to run the firmware for USB protocol. In this system, we let the same DSP chip to run this protocol, Therefore it can reduce the price and volume of the while system greatly.
