In the society of information, users expect that computer can serve us information in a way for men's custom. The technology of multimedia came into being. With it the txt menu of computer has become lifelike and more convenient to users. Users could not only learn and work by txt information, but also by static or moving picture and sound, and join or modify the demonstration of information too. Then the technology of multimedia communication came into being. This is the heading of development of communication. But multimedia communication needs so much computation load that MPU cannot satisfy the need.With the development of digital of information society, the technology of digital signal process has become one important technology. The system of digital signal process accepts analog signal and transform it to digital signal, and then process it in real-time way. DSP can represent the technology of digital signal process or digital signal processor.DSP has its specialties. These will be introduced in chapter one. In addition for satisfying the need of video processing, there is multimedia processors (introduced in chapter two). Meanwhile multimedia technology developed in very fast speed, standard of MEPG1, MPEG2, MPEG4 and standard of H261, H263, H263+ also came into being. They have their own specialty (introduced in chapter three). In chapter four the main algorithms are interpreted.With the multimedia standard and multimedia DSP processor, multimedia communication has not been accomplished, the most important part is coding. Although there is free code, the algorithms are too redundant to be used in real-time communication. So code optimization is needed. Chapter five will interpret the technology of optimization.The functions of multimedia communication will be more various. There is large space for the improvement of multimedia communication. Using algorithms based on objects in MPEG4 make encoder and decoder flexible to satisfy different environment and different need.Computation load will be greatly reduced with more optimization. With more powerful DSPs we can expect the encoders of future will be more complex and more robust.
