The origin of Supercontinuum(SC) generation in optical fibers has been conjectured to be the interplay between fiber nonlinearities(self phase modulation, cross phase modulation and Raman self scattering) and group-velocity dispersion(GVD). The study based on self phase modulation mechanism and the effects of GVD on SC generation are mostly focused on by analyzing and calculating theoretically. The achievements gained in this thesis are as follows:(1) SC generation from optical fibers with different GVD is simulated in detail. It is found that flat and wideband SC can't be obtained in common dispersion-shifted fiber, and dispersion-flattened fiber with small normal GVD is most suitable for flat and wideband SC generation(2) SC generated in dispersion-flattened/decreasing fiber is studied profoundly. It is found that the peak power of pump pulse is important and the fourth and fifth dispersions are crucial to flatly wideband SC generation from the fiber. The results show that the higher-order nonlinear effects on SC generation can be ignored.(3) SC generated in anomalous dispersion region of dispersion-shifted fibers by use of compression effects of higher-order soliton is studied. The results show that the dispersion slope of dispersion-shifted fiber is crucial to SC generation. A flat and ultra-broad-band SC spectrum is obtained by optimizing the fiber parameters and the peak power, pulse width of pump pulse.
