Software Development Process Management Research

With extensive application of computer, computer software is getting more and more complex. Software development is facing many problems to solve, which is that software development has little criterion, discipline and plan; requirements and process are out of control and process capacity is not predictable.American Software Engineering Institute raised the idea of Capacity Maturity Model (CMM). CMM provide software organizations guidance on what to do to gain control of their process and allow an organization to select process improvement strategies by determining current state, weakness, and where to prioritize. There are five levels on CMM from lower to higher, which are respectively Initial, Repeatable, defined, Managed and Optimizing. Each level consists of some Key Process Areas to complete their own goal.CMM specifies "what to do" on software development and Rational Unified Process (RUP) provides a series of processes to implement "how to do". From a management perspective, the software lifecycle of the RUP is decomposed over time into four sequential phases, each concluded by a major milestone; each phase is essentially a span of time between two major milestones. At each phase-end an assessment is performed to determine whether the objectives of the phase have been met. A satisfactory assessment allows the project to move to the next phase.Through selecting some processes of RUP, we designed our scheme of software development process management according to CMM Level 1 and Level 2 to instruct our team to develop software in a management information system and have got some valuable experience for improvement of our software development process.
