When people are working in Wireless LAN, they are restricted to be moving in the coverage of a single Access Point (AP). How to let people roam from one AP to another without data communication being interrupted has become one of the key research works of WLAN. Inter-Access Point Protocol (IAPP) specified by IEEE 802.11 WLAN working group provides recommended practice to support wireless station roaming between Access Points. The research of this paper analyzes the protocol and implements the IAPP function in an AP system.Firstly, a full description of the system and protocol stack of IEEE 802.11 WLAN is presented as well as the main function of 802.11 MAC layer and 802.11 PHY layer. Then the problem resulted from the roaming in WLAN is studied by analyzing the wireless station's communication at MAC layer and IP layer, and the IAPP protocol and mobile IP protocol are adopted to be the resolution with full description of their functional operations. Finally the design and implementation of IAPP function in AP system is fully described.
