At present, there are mainly 3 kinds of video recording media, i .e., magnetic tape, disk and semiconductor memory. The common development prospect of these three media is how to improve the memory capacity and reduce the recording cost. The magnetic tape will continue to put to effect for its character of huge memory capacity.Video Tape Recorder (VTR) is a sort of video recording equipment using magnetic tape. The ratio of signal level to noise level(SN ratio) is a very important index for VTR and the noise is chiefly from magnetic recording system. This paper makes a systemic research of the SN ratio of the magnetic recording system of VHS mode. Firstly the magnetic recording and replaying principle is introduced. Then, the noise of the magnetic recording system is analysed to have a grasp of the character and the principle of the noise. At last, a magnetic recording system is built with ferrite material which have a high SN ratio. This system can fulfil the demands of all kinds of recording mode for VHS.
