This paper discusses who is the author of the comments behind circlesC?0? of theCollating Notes on the Thirteen Classics ,and investigates whether Ruanyuan ,besidcssettflig up the styles for the book ,had taken part in collating the Thirteen Classics andwriting the Collating Notes on the Thirteen Classics .Researching into these problemsis helpful for us to get a clearer understanding of the Collating Notes on the Thirteenclassics ,and to evaluate Ruan抯 achievment on textual criticism. The first section presents seventeen relations between the comments in front ofcircles and those behind circles. The second section ,based on the seventeen relations ,talks over the distinguishinguse of the special mark ??and declares that the author of the comments behindcircles is not the same person who wrote the comments in front of circles .In the end ofthis section ,we put forward a hypothesis the comments behind circles were writtenby the chief collator. The third section discusses the relation between the comments behind circles andRuanyuan who most probably was the chief collator. By comparing Ruan抯 other twoworks with the Collating Notes on the Thirteen Classics, we draw a conclusion: someof the collating notes were really written by Ruan. But they are very, very few. Someof Ruan抯 collating fruits in the two works were absorbed by the Collating Notes on theThirteen Classics, but some of them were not adopted. Thus it is impossible that Ruanwas the solo author of the comments behind circles. The fourth section discusses the relation between the comments behind circles andDuanyucai. Some scholars consider that Duan was the real chief collator. But we founda few comments behind circles opposing Duan. So we incline to believe that thosecomments behind circles were written by several authors, not by only one, and that?thehypothesis which was put forward in Section 2 is wrong. The fifth section pays attention to an odd phenomenon which is often overlooked. There are some collating notes in the Thirteen Classics Including the Collating Notespublished by the Zhonghua Book Company, which are not seen in the separate editionof the Collating Notes on the Thirteen Classics published by Ruanyuan. They werewritten by some scholars in the Prefecture School of Nanehang.
