As all countries in the world pay more attention to the ocean, sonar imaging technology gradually shows its importance. As one of the most important marine exploration technology, human studied on its application before one hundred years ago. However, at present, most existing imaging sonar install in underwater robots, large ships, dam or underwater anchors at home and abroad, which has disadvantages of a larger size, high power consumption, external power supply essentially and operation complex etc. Therefore, the author’s research group developed the helmet-mounted color image sonar. In this paper, the author is mainly responsible for the related algorithm of the sonar system and Software development. In this paper, the mainly content of the study as follows:1. Considering the specific requirements of the sonar system and performance indicators, some basic parameters of the helmet-mounted color image sonar is given by combining with acoustic characteristics and working principle of sonar.2. The compensation of the echo signals lost due to acoustic absorption is based on the distance. Three kinds of weak signal detection algorithm are researched:FFT algorithm, envelope detector and quadrature demodulation. The imaging algorithm that suitable for helmet-mounted color image sonar should be seek out through considering the characteristics of helmet-mounted color image sonar.3. Defines the communication format of the underwater and water data. The transmission medium that suitable for helmet-mounted color image sonar is sought out by Comparing the transmission rate and reliability of the RS-485shielded twisted pair cable and MS-F155fiber.4. The following processes are adopted according to the features of the image of helmet-mounted color image sonar is the energy image and sector. First of all, the image is processed by pseudo color image transform. Another word, the signal energy is converted into a signal that can display in the RGB color space. Secondly, because of the image is sector, it exists some vacant pixels in the process of imaging. The vacant pixel is filled by interpolation of R-Theta algorithm. Finally, the suitable desktop display software of the helmet-mounted color image sonar is developed according to the pseudo color image transform, R-Theta algorithm, and the needs of the desktop software in the process of test.Eventually, the helmet-mounted sonar color image sonar is mainly consists of waist control boxes, sonar, video glasses, watertight cable and onshore industrial computer. Compared with other similar products, it has a characteristic of small size, light weight, easy to carry, simple operation and high image resolution. Not only can the divers to work alone underwater with it, but also can be used with the ground operators. And the desktop software can run on Windows and it has strong portability and good compatibility.
