The fusion of UV and visible image is an emerging development direction in the field of image fusion. With the research and application of UV detection technology are used more widely, UV and visible image fusion also gets more and more attention. In this paper, a real-time fusion system of UV and visible image based on FPGA is studied and designed. These following works are completed concretely.Firstly, the fusion system board is designed. Chips are selected based on system functional requirements and resources consumed by image processing algorithms. Besides, the circuit schematics and PCB are designed, and a post-welding and debugging is completed.Secondly, the image preprocessing and JPEG compression of UV and visible images input are finished including the image enhancement and registration. The histogram stretching is used to de-noise and enhance visible images. The time domain recursive filtering and median filtering in morphological are adopted to enhance UV images according to its goal characteristics. Before fusion, the affine transformation inverse transform is used to UV and visible images registration to complete the subsequent fusion steps. In addition, the JPEG image compression and storage can save a lot of storage space.Thirdly, three FPGA-based image fusion algorithms are achieved. In this paper, image fusion based on Laplace pyramid decomposition method implemented in hardware has been enhanced to improve operational efficiency dramatically. Additionally, the fusion algorithm based on UV target image edge detection is proposed and implemented. A good result is achieved with saving a lot of resources and improving the system real-time. Two experiments are set up to verify the fusion algorithm’s effectiveness.Finally, since the human eyes have a stronger color resolution, this paper realizes the pseudo-color image fusion algorithm based on color transfer. In order to facilitate hardware implementation, the formulas based on YCbCr space color transfer principle are simplified. The operation process is greatly simplified, and also realized in hardware. To validate that the algorithm is effective, different reference images are chosen for these two sets of experiments of color transfer, and good results are achieved.
