Clustering algorithm is applied to control the topology of wireless sensor network through dividing the network into several clusters. Such a manner can reduce energy consumption and extend the network lifetime. Each cluster has a cluster head and several member nodes. Cluster head is responsible for collecting the sensor packets in the cluster, and forwarding them to the base station. This paper introduce the recent research progress of the clustering algorithm, and then by simulation study the well-known clustering algorithm such as LEACH and SEP in general heterogeneous network assuming that the initial energy of each node is not unique. Furthermore, we propose a completely heterogeneous network model which assumes that some advanced nodes have a higher communication power and initial energy. Since that LEACH and SEP both perform badly in the completely heterogeneous network, we designed an enhanced clustering algorithm with energy balance, called ESEP. In ESEP, the optimal number of cluster heads and election probabilities are designed considering different communication power and initial energy. Compared with LEACH and SEP, the simulation results show that ESEP enjoys a better performance in terms of network lifetime and throughput.
