A Study On The Display Content Of "The Empire - Qin Xianyang Historical Relics Exhibition"

As the ancient capital of the Qin State and the Qin Empire, Xi Yang City was grand in scale, and dotted with splendid palatial architectures and advanced thoroughfares, which was very unique in the ancient Chinese cities. As the Second-Level National Museum in China, Xian Yang Museum(XYM) is the cultural memorial cherished by Xian Yang people and the cultural heritage guardian and researcher. It is responsible for serving the public and plays an indispensable role in municipal cultural construction. Among all the collections in XYM, relics related to the Qin were one of the richest and most various component. Consequently, it is the unavoidable responsibilities of XYM to showcase the historical advancement track of the Qin’s prosperity, mighty and extermination to reflect the unique historical status of Xian Yang.The current exhibition themed on the Qin history has been existed for more than50years and made great contributions to the cultural education and tourism. However, because of the obsolete old exhibition equipment, the annual reception number has been declining in recent years. To attract more visitors, and to further perform the public service function of museum, the exhibition restructuring is necessary.To make the exhibition restructuring a great success, a design team was established to form a new exhibition scheme on the base of investigation and research. The design team made an in-depth investigation and research on the Qin history themed exhibition of National Museum of China, Shaanxi History Museum, Baoji Bronze Ware Museum and the Qin Shihuang’s Mausoleum Site Museum. Through analyzing the highlights of the four exhibitions in contents, exhibition design, and the adoption of hi-tech, the designers managed to find proper exhibition techniques suitable for XYM. At the same time, take the public needs into consideration and abide by the standards of the excellent exhibition, the design team summarized the orientation of exhibition restructuring, that is following the people-oriented principal, blending the latest concept and the hi-tech auxiliary techniques and featuring on the Xian Yang characteristics to reflect the development track of the Qin Dynasty.The exhibition theme is to reflect the cultural feature of Qin Capital Xian Yang. The principals followed by designers include the objectiveness and authenticity of the content, the simple and briefness of the interpretation words, the diversity and abundance of exhibition form, the integrity and harmony of old construction and exhibition. In light of the exhibition hall being an old construction of the Ming and the Qing Dynasty, which can’t be changed or renovated, special attention should be paid to produce the courtyard-style advantage of the ancient construction, and overcome the disadvantage of the exhibition dimension to create a harmonious environment. To integrate the exhibition content with the form, a special part named form design notice was included to define the color, the material and the lighting of the exhibition, making the design methods of contents, structure, forms, features even more clear.The Exhibition Scheme of Qin Xian Yang Cultural Heritage Exhibition is composed of three parts, that is "the rising of Qin people and the unification war","the unified kingdom and its achievement", and "the Qin’s reflection". The first part is divided into3groups,"the Qin’s oriental advancement","Shang Yang’s renovation" and "the unification war", including10pieces(sets) of relics,2copies,2pictures,4exhibition boards,2diagrams,1multi-media exhibition area and1interactive game. The second part is divided into "the prosperous empire" and "the glorious capital", including111pieces (sets) of relics,1copy,12pictures,10exhibition boards,2sand tables, and1scene restoration. The third part is divided into3groups,"construction achievement","law and punishment" and "the Qin’s reflection". The auxiliary exhibition techniques include both the traditional methods, like pictures, sand table, scene restoration etc., and some hi-tech methods like digital map, sound-fixed introduction, two-dimension code scan, E-ink exhibition board to enliven the exhibition.The highlight of the scheme lies in the following aspect. In the respect of content, it takes both public interests and the latest archaeological achievement into consideration, reflecting the development track of the Qin history in a considerably all-round way, while emphasizes the Xian Yang features, or the major archaeological achievement of ancient Xian Yang Palaces. In the fields of exhibition technique, it pays attention to the harmonious unifications of ancient temple and the exhibition, reasonably adopts the hi-tech exhibition scheme, and designed some interactive area to bridge the gap between the exhibition and visitors. The scheme has been passed by the professional evaluation meeting and was adopted by XYM.
