Wireless sensor networks have been becoming a fast-growing information technology in recently, the information is collected by multiple sensor nodes coordinated with each other. Wireless sensor networks are consist of a number of sensor nodes which energy is limited, therefore, how to prolong the network lifetime for wireless sensor networks has become the central problem. A variety of routing algorithms have been proposed to improve the network performance to a certain extent, but they have different emphasis. This paper presents a routing algorithm based on energy and distance. In the first instance a new algorithm model is proposed, which is conducive to select a different node transmission strategy for different nodes to reduce the energy consumption of long-distance communications. LEACH clustering routing protocol exists some problems such as the heterogeneous distribution and unreasonable amount of cluster heads. This paper regards node’s residual energy and the distance between the base station and the node as reference factors when cluster head is selected. For the sake of reducing the energy consumption of intra-cluster communication, structure optimization of cluster is needed, namely choosing optimal position and meeting the condition of cluster head, which can reduce the total energy consumption of the networks, thereby effectively extending the lifetime of the entire networks.MATLAB as the simulation tool is applied in this paper, simulation results show that the improved algorithm, compared with LEACH routing algorithm, can effectively improve the network lifetime, balance the network energy consumption and improve overall network performance.
