The Rural Sports Convention was held in1988for the first time inChina, it had been successfully held seven times in every four years. China has becomethe only country in the world to hold the Rural Sports Convention regularly. Thedevelopment of the China’s rural sports can be reflected by the evolution of the RuralSports Convention. The Rural Sports Convention has showed the attention and care paidby the Communist Party and the government to rural residents. It can also inspect thesituation of the development of the rural sports. People’s Daily speaks on the behalf ofthe Central Committee and the Communist Party. It is the most authoritativecomprehensive daily newspaper which has the largest amount of distribution. People’sDaily insists on directing the right public opinion and it thoroughly follows the principleof being a Communist newspaper.The object of the research is the People’s Daily’s coverage contents about the allseventh Rural Sports Conventions. To organize and summarize the contents of allrelative reports, the methods of the content analysis; the literature material law; thecontrastive analysis; and the combination of the qualitative research and quantitative areneeded to be used during the research. In order to find out about the inner rule; featuresand changes in the People’s Daily’s reports and how the People’s Daily measures thefunction of the political propaganda with the dissemination of the news information, theresearch mainly takes the vertical comparison from these four aspects: the amount of thecoverage; the layout; the ways of reporting; and the content of the report. Meanwhile ittakes the horizontal comparison from the People’s Daily’s coverage content between theRural Sports Convention and the National Games.The analysis showed that the amount of the People’s Daily’s coverage of the RuralSports Convention is increased step by step over time. Moreover, the amount of thecoverage is affected by the political policy; economy and the development of thecountry’s sports level. The political ideology is thick; the function of politicalpropaganda is comparatively stood out during the reports while the function of thesports news dissemination is weakened.The People’s Daily’s coverage of the Rural Sports Convention emphasis onpolitical propaganda, it has enriched contents and various forms of reporting. The moodof the coverage is delightful. The coverage is full of humanistic spirit and enjoyment. Inthe meantime, the coverage is lack of public attention and the quality needs to be moreprofessional. In conclusion, the concept of the news reports; the ways of thinking; the features of being a Communist newspaper and the mass sports’ lack of attention inChina are the main reasons which affect the reports.
