According to the cooperation of the segmented action limit time and protection value, the traditional line protection realize the protection of a particular region. But, the continuous growth of the power capacity and network topology structure, which gives protection equipment and device value, action of time setting and tide calculation caused very big difficult. And, the traditional protection of adapting basic depend on local information, almost regardless of the whole network operation state, So when a certain point is at fault, the independence of the information and the complexity of the ladder, is very easy to create the protection device behind fault destruction, and normal the accident will cause wide-spread power outages.Along with the development of modern communication technology, putting the original of the relative independent power dispersed network information together, and estimating a power network calculation points assessment of the state becomes possible.Based on this idea, we have proposed the concept of wise-area protection, different with traditional line protection, that through the wide-area within the scope of the fault information and switch position information collection and analysis comprehensively. When failure occurs, it can judge fault regional and resection in time, still can estimate the whole network of status and trend of estimation, protecting the normal lines not suffering interference, to ensure the safe and stable operation of the grid.It firstly introduces the wide-area protection proposed background and research status, this paper mainly discusses the wide-area protection of performance, function and functional structure, functional division .On the analysis of the limitation of the traditional protection based on mainly introduced the wide-area protection, as with the backup protection huge advantage, this paper puts forward a new kind of wan line backup protection scheme, and presents the scheme research background, significance, principle and realization conditions. The system is simulated on software OPNET, comparing the different situations of end-to-end delay, below the packet drop ratio and communication links, the results show that the throughput of a communication system can satisfy the wide-area protection. Use the IP OVER SDH based on MPLS can achieve power communication mode, data transmission real-time and to ensure that the data have reliability and validity.Research results prove that the wide-area protection system, with the feasibility and correctness of the modern communication technology developing and the existing technology improving, will be used widely in the future relay protection system.
