Nowadays, at the times of information, the total quantity of knowledge increases rapidly. It is necessary for education to train the talented persons, who have strong ability to learn and enjoy life. High school student's learning period is great importance throughout a person's whole life, that can develop the everlasting interests in learning and lay the foundation knowledge, but what is more critical is that a man can both form his own learning quality as well as the ability of lifelong learning. For this reason, the demand that the students'learning methods should be change in order to let them manage that learning was clearly put forward in the New Curriculum Reform.Scholars both at home and abroad do a lot of research on self-directed learning. Foreign scholars research contains the following aspects:definition, the oretical basis, the influence factors and teachers' new role, self-directed learning mode, etc. Domestic scholars did some theoretical research,at the same time they also did a number of experimental studies of teaching. They are not enough to know current situation of students'self-directed learning in the process of New Curriculum Reform.In this education background, the research discusses present situation of self-directed learning through the questionnaire, high school students to find in the independent learning problems, and discusses how to improve students' self-directed learning. The target of this study randomly selected parts of the students from two high school. The study uses a tool of an adapted questionnaire. The questionnaire consists of 100 projects, involving the following seven aspects: learning motivation, formulation of learning objectives, the use of learning strategies, monitoring and evaluation of the learning process, selection of learning content, learning resource utilization, time management. Then, it uses SPSS software for statistical analysis of survey results.The survey results show that the overall level of high school students' learning is moderate. The self-directed learning level of students from different grades is no significant difference. In the area of developing learning objectives, the students is at a lower level. At the self-directed learning, high school students are at low level of using learning resources, especially on social resources utilization. At the self-directed learning, high school students are at lower-middle level of time management. Gender differences exist in self-directed learning of high school students, girls' self-directed learning level is lower than boys'.Based on the results of the survey, the author gives some tentative suggestions on how to improve the level of students' self-directed learning. Teachers should arouse students' learning motivation, and cultivate autonomous learning awareness; help students establish positive and moderate learning goals; guide students learning to improving material utilization; finally teach students plan and manage their own learning time.
