The research of Status inconsistency raised from 1940s has more than 50 years'history. Series of studies made a lot of explanatory and powerful theories, but also found a great deal of evidence worthy debating. China is now in the period of rapid social transformation, this is in keeping with Coleman's theoretical perspective that "in periods of rapid change status inconsistency are created for a large number of members."The consequences of status inconsistency, including psychological pressure, social prejudice, social isolation and so on, have negative impact on the building of harmonious society. The study of the consequences will of course be helpful and contributes to explore the theoretical tool which is suitable for the strategic goal of "harmonious society".Using 2005 Chinese General Social Survey data, this paper, constructed OLS regression model for dependent variables including psychology health, discrimination, social participation, equal opinions and satisfaction of government respectively, our finding is:(1) The effect of status inconsistency is stable. In this article, selected "ascribe-achieved" indicators, as well as "investments-earnings" indicators of inconsistencies have received great significance. Further, consider the direction of inconsistency types, the positive inconsistency have positive effect on the individuals, that is, take the status consistent as the reference group, lower ascribe status but higher achieved status, as well as the lower investment and higher earnings individuals, experience more happiness in their daily lives, higher degree of accept of newcomers, also more likely to take participate in social organizations and be more helpful. On the item of equal opinion, the positive type of "investment- earnings" individuals are more likely to accept the fairness of the income gap and more satisfy with the government work. In contrast, the negative direction of status inconsistency leads to negative effect.(2) The result strongly supported the equal theory. Using of the theory can better explain the building of a harmonious society.
