Under the context of massification of higher education, China's adult education, especially the local institutions, is facing many difficulties and challenges, one of outstanding problems is lack of school-running characteristics. How to get rid of developing crisis and form characteristics as well as enhance competitiveness is getting more and more attention in education field. Based on the definition and connotation of adult higher education school running characteristics, this paper explores the characteristics development of adult higher education of local universities.This paper thinks that the elements of adult higher education should contain school-running idea, profession setting, teaching staff, teaching quality and management module. Nowadays, the rise of characteristic development of adult higher education is the inevitable trend of the development of adult higher education and is driven by marketization originally. At present, although in local adult colleges the sense of crisis the awareness of characteristics are growing, there also exists many problems such as the variation of school-running idea, the convergence of profession setting, the weakening of teaching staff, the coarsening of teaching quality and the rigidity of management module. The root of the problems lies in the inadequate funding, the deviation of education, the imperfect management system, the traditional culture and the school itself. To resolve these problems and strengthen the characteristic development of local adult colleges, we should carry it out from three aspects: country (government), universities (adult colleges) and society. Firstly, regulate the educational function of government; secondly, create right public opinion; thirdly, strengthen self-innovation and reformation; fourthly, reinforce the theory research of adult education.Based on the knowledge comes from practice and in turn serve practice, the last part of this paper investigates and analyzes the characteristic development of Further Education College of Wen Zhou Medical College as a case. Although the college has formed some characteristics and have some extent of competitiveness, there still exist some deviation and deficiency in school-running idea, teaching quality and training category. As to these problems, the author gives some countermeasures by the combination of the reality of college.
