More and more left-behind children have appeared as their parents seek jobs in urban areas, which is an attendant phenomenon in the course of China' s industrialization. The educational level of these left-behind children not only plays limits on their own future but also has a tremendous impact on the national stability and development. As a result, the educational attainment of the rural hometown-remained children has already become a social problem raised for urgent consideration and solution. On the basis of the field survey in Xinzhuang, I try to look into the cause of the rear children' s educational problem from the perspective of the variation of their family functions. Through further study, I come to conclusion as follows:1.The long-time seperation between parents and children has a domino effect on their family. The stable triangle of the family structure has almost been ruptured because of parent absence. Most rural rear children lived in a core family or a dual-family before their parents went out. Nowadays, they mostly live either with one parent or with their grandparents. Some children are guaranteed by relatives or friends instead of by their own parents. There are even those who live on their own. The destruction of the family structure accounts for the transmutation of the family function. To these variant households, consumption function is getting stronger whereas educational function and emotional function are getting weaker.2.By changing family environment, the variation of the family functions influences the children' s education. Family environment consists of physical environment, cultural environment and interpersonal environment.3. The transmutation of the rear children' s family function originates from disharmony that the adjustment of urban-rural social system follows behind the disintegration of urban-rural economy system. Consequently, if more educational resources are allocated to rural hometown-remained children, Pareto opimality will be carried out.The present thesis brings up two strategies on dealing with rear children' s educational problem from the angle of educational economics. Firstly, school voucher for the rural children covered by the compulsory education period should be paid by the Central Government. Secondly, educational fund for rural left-behind children should be set up.
