ⅠIntroductionIt is clearly stated by the third national education conference and by the state council in"The Decision of Deepening the Educational Reform So as to Promote the Quality Education in a Full Scale"that health is the basic precondition for the young people to serve the mother country, is an embodiment of the vigorous life-force of the Chinese people. Physics education in schools, which is a major component of the program of fostering high quality people, affects the sound growth of the students. In the implementation of the current PE curriculum reform in the universities and colleges in China, some problems relating to the traditional ideas and teaching modes are found in the PE curriculum: first, the curriculum has neglected the benefits oriented to the students'lives after graduation; second, there is a lack of entertainment sports and traditional sports; third, it is sufficient in the range while insufficient in the depth; forth, there is insufficient relations with the students'future jobs, thus can not meet the demand of the society; fifth, the teaching methods are not proper, thus can not meet the students'requirements; sixth, insufficient time allocated for PE theories. It is the prime task of the current reform to find solutions to the above problems. To find a way out of the problems of curriculum content, the researcher chooses the ordinary higher education institutions in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai as the subjects of this study. This paper tries to examine the curriculum content of these schools and the actuality of the implementation, to find out the major problems and the causes and solutions as well, so as to make the curriculum content more practical. This study shows great practical meaning for the reform and development of the PE curriculum content in higher education.ⅡMethodologyThe methods conducted in this research are, literature review, questionnaire, interview, logic analysis, contrastive analysis, statistics processing, etc. ⅢConclusions1. The analysis of the evolvement of the PE curriculum content in universities and colleges after the establishment of the Republic reveals that the content has been subject to the politics, economy, and culture, and the evolvement shows a few trends: first, the focus of curriculum will move from physical quality to an overall development including physical, psychological, and social environment adapting qualities; second, the content will be optional rather than compulsory; third, it will pay more attention to the students'value rather than the teachers'; forth, it will pay more attention to life long physical quality; fifth, the content will be more scientific, effective and interesting; sixth, the content will be more comprehensive, various, and bears more ethical, practical cultural and fashionable features; seventh, the content will be more adjustable, autonomous, and better suits the autonomous learning; eighth, the time allocation will be more rational, etc.2. The comprehensive analysis of the curriculum content after 1949 reveals that though certain achievements have been made, there still exist many problems like how to set the range and depth of knowledge and skill, how to integrate traditional sports into textbooks, the allocation of time of theoretical and practical classes, there are more theoretical discussions than practical experiments in the academic community.3. With an examination and analysis of the PE curriculum content and its implementation in the universities and colleges in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai, it can be concluded that some achievements have been made: more goals concerning life long targets are set; the content is in accordance with the new curriculum and can meet the requirements of students of different levels; the class scale is in accordance with the new curriculum, and the facilities are adequate, which can benefit the students'comprehensive learning; the teaching of particular items make further research possible; there is a rational design of the curriculum content with various teaching models. There are also some shortcomings to be overcome: lack of entertainment and traditional sports, insufficient in depth, weak relations with the students'future jobs and social demands, improper teaching methods and insufficient periods of theoretical class.4. Solutions: intensifying the teacher training to improve the comprehensive quality of the teaching staff; fully developing and employing various resources to create better conditions for curriculum reform; further perfecting the optional learning system to ensure successful implementation of the curriculum content; attaching more importance to theoretical class, combining various teaching methods with practice and provide theoretical instructions for the students for the sake of physical and mental health.
