The professional stress of middle school teachers in poor rural area is not onlyrelated to both their health and job performance, but with whole rural compulsoryeducation. Taking 16 rural pubic middle schools from Gushi county in Henanprovince as object, by using questionnaie, interview, observation,case study, andstatistical analysis, this research tries to investigate the level and sources of teacherprofessional stress in this area. In the end of the article, some suggestions are putforward to decrease the professional stress of rural middle school teachers in this area.The conculsions drawn by this research are as follows: 1. The rural middleschool teachers in Gushi country generally experience high level professional stress.51.4%of them think their job is very stressful, 26.4%of them think their job isextremely stressful. 2. A principle components analysis of the sources of pressionalstress reveles seven factors labelled: school administration, sutdents and exam,workload,teaching conditions,social position and treatment,need forself-development,and social expectation, workload,school administration and socialposition and treatment are most outstanding. In addition, the demographic variablescan affect pressional stress level and source of professional sress.3. In order todecrease professional stress among the rural middle school teachers in this district,government should improve rural middle school teachers' economic status;government and headmasters schould alleviate teachers' workload and the stress fromthe education of countryside left-home children;headmaster should improve theeffiency of school management; the post-position education of rurual middle schollteachers should be emphised and strengthed by the government and headmasters; fairand reasonable teacher appointment mechanism should be established by perfectingteacher personnel reform, teachers themselves should be conscious of the important ofmental health protection and try to improve the ability of self-adjusting to professionalstress.
