Education for all-round development is an inevitable choice to catch up with the development of times and world education, and to face the reformation in the 21 century. The law of compulsory education, emended during the eleventh "five-year plan", for the first time mentions in law that education for all-round development should be carried out, which is an important act to fully advance it.Colleges have on their shoulders the responsibility of national higher education and they are on top of the education pyramid. University men are persons with abilities and they are of great importance to the future constructions of our motherland. To carry out education for all-round development during university life through blend of engineering and scientific courses and combination of liberal and science education, is important to make students form rational knowledge and ability structure. Besides, the set of chemistry courses among the students major in literae humaniores and social science bears practical meanings to cultivate their scientific quality, and master useful chemistry knowledge both in daily life and social decision-makings. Chemistry with life, society and environment, a book for students major in literature and society, is designed and written in order to cooperate with the establishment of education for all-round courses in colleges.On the basis of making references to some literature data in teaching material compiling, learning some pedagogical and psychological theories useful to guiding design and writing of textbook, and reading several chemistry educational textbook used in colleges in China, this paper, through probing into the ideas of designing and writing textbook and combing theories and practice, mainly deals with the shaping and history of the idea of "base on students and life" as well as its embodiment during the process of designing and writing teaching materials. Moreover, under this idea, the author wrote the part "chemistry and life" in Chemistry with life, society and environment, and did research of teaching pertinence by teaching practice.The research reveals that the idea of "base on students' development and life" accords with the orientation of Chemistry with life, society and environment, namely, the idea that it is the teaching material for college students major in literae humaniores and social science and it could better achieve the functions of chemistry quality education. It is certain that we still should do relative studies on the strategies and methods of using this textbook during actual teaching process to make the idea of "base on students and life" truly come into force and help to improve students' scientific quality and living standards.
