Punishment is an educational way which is opposite to praise, and wecan't say whether it is good or not. However, punishment is often misusedby educators, so a lot of students have been hurt. As a result, many peopleincluding professional educators regard the punishment in education as anerror. Therefore, it is necessary to understand punishments in educationcorrectly, to analyse the reasons of wrong punishments in education, andto explore the means to right punishments. Based on exploring themeaning of proper punishments and the reasons of wrong punishments, wefind that students' correcting mistakes should be promoted by the internalmotivation which derives from mental strength, because one's mentalstrength plays an important role in his actions. One's needs are theinternal motivations that promote the person to take actions, especiallythe social needs which play a decisive role in one's behavior choices.Therefore, we take the theory of demands proposed by Maslow astheoretical basis to analyse the contents of the internal motivation, and toillustrate the means that can trigger off that motivation. The research notonly deepens and widens the study of punishments in education, but alsopromotes educators to reflect their punishments.Although there are lots of wrong punishments in education whichhave led people to misunderstand the punishments, punishment is stillneeded in education. The reasons are that appreciate punishment ineducation can not only accelerate individual socialization of studentswhich is essential to the development of society, but also promotestudents' development as they could learn something from punishments.The premise to punish students correctly is that educators shouldunderstand the real meaning of punishments in education, and they alsoshould be very familiar with the types of punishments in education.The characteristic of wrong punishment in education is that theforms and intensity of punishments' pain are not proper. As certain pain isneeded in punishments, it is very important to differentiate rightpunishments from wrong punishments by analyzing wrong punishments.On the base of analyzing the characteristic of wrong punishments, we cantake two steps against wrong punishments in education. One is thateducators should accept correct ideas for punishing, the other is thateducators should adopt proper types of punishments which can produceproper pain.Wrong punishments can't promote students to correct mistakeseffectively, for there is no internal motivation for correcting mistakes tobe triggered off in wrong punishments. Punishments need students'internal motivation because of the demand of educational punishment'sevolving function, the demand of human's social attribute, and needs ofyoungsters' development. One's mental strength of meeting his needsproduces basic motivation to do something, so students' self-protectionneed can promote them to correct mistakes. Students' self-protection needmeans that students want to take less pain and try to meet their reasonableneeds. The reasonable needs that students try to meet in students'self-protection need are mainly social needs, including being loved, beingrespected, belonging and self-realization. The teachers should meetstudents' such needs as much as possible so as to make them produceinternal motivation to mend up students' mistakes.
