The promulgation of the new curriculum reform program by the Education Ministry clarifiesthe concept in music education that the elementary music education should serve all the students,respect their individuality and focus on their overall development. This concept has aroused theattention of numerous experts in curriculum designing and discipline development in the field ofeducation and has become the consensus that more and more educators share. Music educationwith students taking a dominant position is significant as it allows for the maximum tapping ofthe inherent potential of the students, promotion of their overall development and theimprovement on the music education as a whole. The music education systems of advancedcountries of the world all attach importance to the dominant role of students in learning musicand emphasize the idea that music education should be a process that students participate inactively and experience personally. Ever since the reform program of the new curriculum, musicteachers have made the approach of "students as the major role" their goal and tried to put it intopractice. However, not satisfactory results have yet been reached so far. Music teaching andresearch taking students as the major role aim at changing the stereotyped teaching methodfeaturing uniformity, providing students, based on their interests, demands and personalexperiences, with opportunities to participate in , experience, perform and create music andinspiring them to learn with interest in independent research in the process.This paper, based on the characteristics of the music discipline, analyzes the problemsexisting in music teaching domestically and the status quo in other countries and explores thetheory and practice of music teaching with students acting as the major role , targeting at givingfull play to the enthusiasm, initiative and creativity of the students. Centering on the disciplines'content, methods, roles of students and teachers etc, and the application of the teaching principleof joyful learning, timely encouragement, combining questions and activities, the paper alsoexplores the flexible and open teaching methods of life-based, harmonious, diversified andhumanity-based evaluation so as to establish a new concept and a new approach of teachingfeaturing the independent learning and performance of the students and concludes that only withthat can the students become the master of the their music learning and their all-round qualitiesbe improved.
