The American educator John Dewey's democratic educational thought, formulated from a totally new perspective, has far-reaching impacts on the educational democracy in the U.S. and the whole world. An in-depth study into its rich contents would be very conducive to the democratization of education and the modernization of society in China. This thesis, based on a research into the social background and theoretical basis of the formation of Dewey's educational thought, and especially on Dewey's democratic philosophy, has arrived at the nucleus of Dewey's educational theory, i.e. his democratic educational thought. Drawing a lesson from this, this paper goes on to explore a new way of thinking for the democratization of educational suited to the condition of our country. In the 21 century, the democratization of education has become an important task of the modernization of education. There is a wide gap between the desirable educational democracy and the present condition of education in our country. Dewey's democratic educational thought fells us that we should carry on the spirit of democracy in the realm of education, and that we should promote the democratization of education in three fields: fairness in education, democratization of decision-making and management in education, and a relationship between teachers and students based on democratic and equal terms.
