It has been four years since the New Chinese Text Book for Seniors published by People's Education Press was put into use officially. And there have been two batches of graduates who used it. However, what cultural background is this textbook based on? And what effects does this background have on the compilation of the New Chinese Text Book for Seniors published by People's Education Press? What are the cultural features of this textbook? And what cultural influence do these features produce? There seems no systematic research on these questions till now. This article develops its analysis from the following angles: Firstly, the cultural background of which the New Chinese Text Book is born, mainly social situations, previous textbooks, the system of editing and using; Secondly, the influence of culture on the New Chinese Text Book, mainly the choice of materials, the arrangement of articles , the change of notes, the determination of teaching requirements and the design of post-text exercises; Thirdly, the cultural features of the New Chinese Text Book, which are expounded in some aspects such as literature works, art, history, scientific knowledge, social customs, etc; Fourthly, the cultural influence, this part refers to the cultural influence of the new textbook, which is considered as a medium of culture, on the teachers, students, andthe society. The analysis above leads to a conclusion: the New Chinese Text Book for Seniors published by People's Education Press reflects a particular social culture and it differs from other text books just because of this very cultural background. Meanwhile, the Book follows the wheels of history and the fashion of times without losing its own characteristics. As a medium of culture, the Book passes it on and on, but it is bound reform. Though such a function may not be so powerful, it hasalready found its way forward -from abstract to concrete, fromcopying to producing. The series has its strong points and drawbacks as well. Anyhow, it has left behind a treasure, which we may turn to when some other textbooks are to be written.
