Unit Teaching is a kind of teaching pattern, which regards unit as a basic one, and uses systematic ways to arrange contents of courses, to organize teaching process, to guide students, thus to improve teaching efficiency generally. This theory grows from Interest-centered Curriculum and Integration Teaching Theory of Decroly, one of the New Teaching Movement initiators in the 1800s in Europe. Later on, Kibpatrick's "Designing Teaching" and Morison's "The Morison Plan" reflected somewhat ideas and features of Unit Teaching, and carried it forward. Since 1950's, Unit Teaching has formed a much complete system of its own from theory to practice.Chinese Unit Teaching (CUT) in our country was born in the early 1900s by the effects of New Educational Movement that was carried out in Europe and America. Its development can be roughly divided into 4 periods: First, the preliminary period which began from Chinese establishing individually to the May 4th Movement. Second, the embryonic period, from 1920s to the Late 1940s.Third, a tentative-developing period, from the state founded to the Great Cultured Revolution. Fourth, a deep-developing period, from the Great Revolution till now. The second part of the thesis's manages to make a deep systematic research into the development of the Chinese Unit Teaching used in middle school in China.lt emphatically introduces and analyses the main achievements accomplished in Chinese Unit Teaching in middle schools of China since 1980s.The third part theoretically inquires into CUT in middle schools in China. Firstly, as a teaching pattern, CUT draws on the theoretical and practical experience of others for reference. They are Cybernetics. Theory of Systematize, Theory of information, Broom's "The Pattern of Mastering Learning", Theory of Removing Learning, Babansky's "Theory ofOptimizing Teaching". Secondly, it analyses and studies prerequisite, angle and aligment of CUT organization. Thirdly, it generalizes the basic features of CUT, such as systematization,combination,wholeness,comparability, centralization and so on. Fourthly, it summarizes advantages and disadvantages of CUT in middle schools.The last part draws lessons from CUT at present, and tries to combine features of the society in the future. It is looking forward to CUT in China from both courses combining and practicing. It also hopes to contribute to the development of CUT in China.
