From the current situation of Chinese education, the internal relationship between the two periods, namely, the earlier period of 20th century and the New Period, and the role Chinese education plays in the whole educational system and in the society, this paper interprets the purpose and significance of choosing this subject.The paper elucidates the educational thoughts of the two periods and makes a comparative analysis upon them from three aspects: the social and educational background, the modernization process of linguistics, literature and philology, and the thoughts of Chinese education. Generally speaking, they share the modern, scientific and democratic features while the turbulence and the crisis of the earlier period and the stability and prosperity of the New Period characterize them distinctively. The author draws the conclusion: democratization is the tendency of the social development; with Chinese education it is embodied in the cooperation of various fields; the measure criteria of Chinese education and the whole education should be human overall development and human happiness; both the development of Chinese and education and human's growth are the process of establishing subjectivity.
