Mathematics is an important basic subject, and it is the basis of studying other disciplines. Sixth grade math’s learning plays a key role for future academic progress, and it provides the necessary preparation for the future of mathematics learning. This study based on Qujing’s local reality, from the perspective of representation, on the carrier of mathematical problem solving, does some research into three questions: one is the present situation investigation—knowing about the ways of mathematical problem solving of the sixth grade students in Qujing’s urban and rural elementary schools; The second is to carry out a case study of representation types shown in problem-solving strategies; Third, combined with literature analysis, theoretical study and case study, some suggestions are put forward to improve the mathematics problem solving ability in primary schools. The main conclusions of this study are as follows : for most of Sixth-grade students, when they deal with these mathematical problems such as average, scale and area, their representation level reaches the procedural representation level; when they cope with the problems of the pattern, their representation level reaches the abstract representation level; nonetheless, when they solve the problems of number theory, their representation level only reaches the intuitive representation level; when they solve the problems of math, their representation level was significantly and positively correlated with their math achievements. Finally, in order to improve their ability of solving math problems, this study puts forward some countermeasures for teaching. The study has gotten some valuable findings: a. pointing out the cause of the difficulties of solving mathematics problems in the primary school; b. putting forward some more effective strategies. It as a new starting point will be further studied in future.
