Chinese textbooks are the major source of education provided by institutions, they serve as the solid foundation for achieving instructional objectives and performing educational functions. Concrete teaching methodologies are rooted in those textbooks. What’s more, they are the major source for students to indirectly attain systematic knowledge, develop intelligence, cultivate ideologies, and moral standards. Textbooks also serve as media creating interactions between teachers and students. Therefore, the drafting and the proper use of Chinese textbooks are of crucial importance in bringing Chinese teaching to a new level. With the advent of the New Curriculum Reform, the methodology of Chinese teaching is undergoing drastic changes while Chinese textbooks are becoming more diverse. As a result, various editions of Chinese textbooks are now available. The lack of writing theory and practical experience, however, make the serious study of those textbooks a critical move in adapting to the wave of the New Curriculum Reform.Traditional Chinese literature plays a unique role in Chinese curriculum as well as in both curriculum requirements and teaching assessment. Ancient Chinese poetry accounts for a major part of the Chinese college entrance examination, in addition, the Senior High School Curriculum on Chinese states that students should be able to read simple traditional Chinese with the help of annotations and reference books. However, due to the fact that students are in dire need of interests in reading traditional Chinese literature and an optimum language environment for learning traditional Chinese, they are seldom provided with opportunities to practice their traditional Chinese skills. All this raises challenges for teaching traditional Chinese literature. The author of this essay, after studying and analyzing the traditional Chinese literature part of different editions of Chinese textbooks, tried to solve the problem of how to arrange traditional Chinese literature in Chinese textbooks according to the criteria put forward by the New Curriculum Reform and how to let the students get the most out of their textbooks because high quality textbooks boost satisfying results. This essay compared the traditional Chinese literature part of Chinese textbooks for senior high school students published by Guangdong Education Publishing House with the ones published by People’s education Press. These two editions are picked out to represent the Northern and the Southern China. Through the comparison among the model essay system, the study guidance system, the exercise system and the knowledge system, and by showing graphs, listing examples, interviewing and investigating, this essay concludes that the traditional Chinese part of the two editions have their own features while both have room for growth. The writer hence formulates suggestions on how to choose articles for Chinese textbooks and how can Chinese teachers take the most advantage of the textbooks.
