The qualities of teachers have been attached great importance since the start of the curriculum reform. During recent years, in response to needs of teacher professional development, various teacher training programs have been launched and implemented, and some achievements have been made in raising professional qualities of teachers. Meanwhile, the effectiveness and quality control of teacher training or professional development program remain an issue and call for more systematic study and evaluation.College of Teacher Education of Nanjing Normal University, one of the key bases of teacher training in Jiangsu Province was the basis of the program of "2012 Provincial Training for Senior High School Teachers". The present researcher, an M.ed candidate from the College of Teacher Education took the advantage and made the study about the program, aiming to gain some understanding of how a teacher training program is designed and implemented as well as its effect. By using various methods of collecting data including questionnaires, interview, on-site observation, documents study.Analysis of the data that yields the following major findings:1) In terms of the designing premise, the training program addressed the nature of adult learning and practical needs of teachers with clear purposes and feature in lesson study, and the program designing was based on needs investigation; 2) Regarding the implementation, the whole process went well according the plan with mainly four types of activities, namely lecturing, classroom observation; lesson study discussions and trainees’ presentation of their experience; 3) In terms of effectiveness of the program, it was seen in three aspects:active participation of most of the study sessions; changed knowledge identified through pre- and post questionnaires; but follow-up study on sustained effect of the training program was not conducted; and 4) About the factors affecting the effectiveness of the training program, there are some findings concerned with the trainer-related factors and the trainees-related factors as well as various context factors.Through the research of this case, the researcher hopes to share the experience of the training and to give some inspiration to the later projects so as to enhance the effectiveness of the training of English teachers in primary and middle schools.
