Virtual learning communities are the products of the rapid development of the internet and the arrival of the information era, its powerful virtual, open, interactive, learning and communal features make this new-style structure of learning be more and more widely used ineducational domain. Modern learning theory, especially the development of the theory of constructivism pushes knowledge building to a prominent position and makes peopte distract their attention from the delivery of information to the construction of knowledge. The study of knowledge building in virtual learning communities is of vital importance to improve the learners’ abilities of knowledge building and to make full use of the advantages of the virtual learning communities.The study based on the virtual learning communities’ basic concept, theoretical basis, essential factors and features and the basic concept, procedures, principles and evaluation criteria of knowledge building, using the method of social network analysis and concept analysis, making the network course "Document of Law" in the network teaching platform of Yangzhou university as an example, analyze the procedure of knowledge building and the overall network structure of virtual learning communities on the basis ofstatistical data analysis of the forum. It’s good for researchers to learn the basic operation of the whole network community more intuitively and to understand the influence fectors of knowledge building in virtual learning communities more deepley. Meantime, the study has proposed the improvement strategy of the ability of knowledge building and the construction suggestions of the network teaching platform ofYangzhou University.
