Homeschooling has witnessed a dramatic growth over the past decades and has become an increasingly popular school choice in the United States. Although homeschoolers were once dismissed as fringe, today they are becoming recognized as mainstream, given their diversity and numbers. Historically, home education has been a primary method for parents to educate their children. Over time, the rise of compulsory education laws in the United States eroded the prevalence of home instruction. However, since the 1960s and1970s, homeschooling has gradually again become a popular method of instruction. During this time, homeschooling advocates have pressed for the legal right to forgo compulsory school attendance and educate their children at home, but not without opposition. This paper provides an overview of homeschooling development and focus on the role of homeschooling parents.This paper includes a preface and four parts;The preface includes the purpose, content of this paper, the concept of homeschooling, and the present research status at home and abroad.Part one traces the background of homeschooling in the United States, and the reasons why homeschooling happened in the United States.Part two introduces two individuals who made a significant impact on the legalization of homeschooling in the United States, some key court cases which affect homeschooling, the process of legalization, and the feature of this period, which is the parents’ strong willing and behavior to fight for the education rights of their children.Part three describes the developing period of homeschooling in the United States.Part four describes the maturity of homeschooling in the United States till 2001, including the scale of homeschooling students, the academic achievement and socialization of them, the state regulation of homeschooling, the new reasons that parents choose homeschool.In the end is the conclusion of the advantages of homeschooling in the United States which are worth learning.
