This subject of this dissertation is the “learning by reading andreciting” method, which is used of teaching ancient classics for high schoolstudents. The dissertation is based on the examples from Lijiang Number1HighSchool in Yunnan province. During its5000years of history, numerous Chineseliterary classics and masterpieces have been passed down generation aftergeneration, which reflect the country’s finest culture as well as Chinesepeople’s infinite wisdom. To learn these literary classics will therefore helpour youth to understand our culture in ways that learning current literary cannotdo. As a result, it is imperative that our youth study these literary classics.However, ancient literary classics have many different linguisticcharacteristics than current language, which makes teaching and learning it verymuch harder than teaching and learning current literary works. Many studentsshow little interest and low efficiency in learning the ancient classics.“Learning by reading and reciting” method has been one of the mostimportant Chinese language teaching methods from ancient times. It suits thecharacteristics of ancient Chinese language and can help develop students’ancient Chinese sense better than any other methods. The New Standard Lessonalso states that teachers should stimulate students’ interest and raise theirability in learning ancient classics by reading and reciting a large number ofancient classics.“Learning by reading and reciting” method will enable thestudents to feel the charm of ancient classics and taste their gist. During thisprocess, they will get to learn Chinese traditional culture, which helps torefine their minds and behaviors.This dissertation has made research on “Learning by reading and reciting”method used in Lijiang Number1High School. It gives an in-depth analysis onproblems shown during this methods and renders some thoughts and advice againstthese problems. The dissertation has4chapters:Chapter1: Introduction. First part: subject introduction, research meaning,method and techniques; Second part:“Learning by reading and reciting” methodhistory, which makes the foundation for further study. Third part: subjectmatter defined: teachers and students from different levels of classes in highschool. Research approach: survey, case study and study of other works for thesame subject.Chapter2: The requirement and value of “Learning by reading and reciting”method in current Chinese teaching. First of all, under the New Standard Lesson,the teaching of ancient classics are adjusted: ancient classics quantity in high school Chinese lessons is raised from20%to40%; it emphasizes the “Learningby reading and reciting” method and requires mandatory recitation of certainpassages. Second of all,“Learning by reading and reciting” method isexcellent traditional teaching method. It suits the Chinese language and showsgreat strength in developing students’ ancient Chinese sense. In currentancient classics teaching, this method has great advantage in areas such aslanguage training, feeling emotion of the author, raising aesthetic ability etc.This method has been re-adopted by teachers after a period of silence.Chapter3: Current situation of insufficient use of “Learning by readingand reciting” method in high schools and its consequence. First through surveyand case study, the dissertation shows analysis on the quantified data of usingof the method in the subject school. Secondly, the dissertation has analyzedthe reason and consequence of the missing of this method in high school Chineseteaching.Chapter4: Disclosure of problems existing in the use of “Learning byreading and reciting” method in high schools and raising the solutions. In class,change the conventional stiff process of learning ancient classics, createinteresting and multi-dimensional atmosphere of “reading and reciting”.Establish good teacher-student relationship. Outside of class, provide bigplatform of “reading and reciting”; create better environment of “readingand reciting”; develop class with its own characteristics and infill “learningby reading and reciting” method into the school’s educational system; use allthe resources to expand the “reading and reciting” of Chinese classicliteratures, making the learning of ancient classics not only a requirement fromcollege entrance examinations but also something that the students are willingto do themselves.
