Classics are the essence of human culture. Reading classics can enlighten the readers, enriching their wisdom and improving their language ability as well as humanityattainment. Therefore, since the1920s, all the Chinese teaching outlines (also calledcurriculum standards) have put forward explicit requirements in this aspect, and those bythe new curriculum standard are more specific. It is stipulated in the10tharticle in CourseObjectives that students are supposed to extend their interest in and broaden their horizonof reading. They are expected to learn how to choose proper reading materialsindependently. Furthermore, they ought to read good books, finishing an entire book a time,to enrich the spiritual world of their own and enhance their cultural taste. It is alsosuggested that the students read at least five famous literary works with over1,500,000words altogether. In addition, some recommended reading lists are listed in Appendix1. Ina gesture to implement the requirements of the new standard, the examination instructionsissued by the education department of Jiangsu Province in2008included10masterpiecessuch as “A Dream in Red Mansions” in the examination scope of the liberal arts examineesfor the first time. However, many teachers and students don’t attach enough importance to readingmasterpieces at present, which restricts the promotion of additional classics readingteaching level. The author, from different angles, launched an investigation into twoaspects: additional classics reading for students and additional classics teaching of teachers. We can draw a conclusion after conducting the survey. On one hand, students suffer asevere decline of their ability to read classics, with the reading motivation going awry; theyalso lack good reading habits as well as an appropriate attitude towards classics reading. On the other hand, in the teaching practice of additional classics reading, a large number ofteachers tend to be contradictory in understanding and action, which makes classicsreading teaching out of order. According to the information and data got from the investigation and interview, the author put forward the idea of how to teach additionalclassics reading in liberal arts classes in high school——at the level of experts, teachersand students, hoping to achieve a win-win situation between additional classics readingand the college entrance examination.
