Since the1980s, modern new Confucianism has entered into its renaissance; in1986,"Modern New Confucian Thoughts Research" was identified as the key national research subject in the "Seventh Five-Year Plan" period, and mainland scholars began to study the new Confucian thoughts of Hong Kong and Taiwan scholars, followed by a wave of "Chinese hot" in recent years; Wang Caigui,"the first person promoting globally the reading of classics", launched reading campaign among teenagers in1994in Taiwan, In2001, Professor Wang gave a lecture called "One speech shocks one hundred years" at Beijing Normal University. Since then, classic reading and learning have been expanded to the mainland rapidly from extra-curricular to curricular activities. Classes, schools, projects and curricula of classic reading came out. Some held a positive attitude while others took the opposite opinions towards the concept, content and method of classic reading. Through a deep understanding of the viewpoints from both sides, the writer thinks the skeptics may misunderstand the meaning of reading classics:Wang’s idea is in accordance with the modern new Confucianism, and if children and even the whole people read classics, it is good for raising their subject consciousness and social sense of responsibility and building self-confident and independent Chinese cultural subjectivity. In terms of Lu Xun’s view of "building man", the writer puts forward that it is expected to make people and nation independent through classic reading, and to cultivate the people contributing to the future world. However, the public are in the lack of objective knowledge of classics and the content, purpose, value and method of classic reading. The writer believes it is necessary to make a further study in order to reasonably apply into teaching activities. This thesis first introduces the education principle of Wang Caigui’s classic reading and the thought of modern new Confucianism; second, it resolves the question about reading classics and illustrates the rationality of classic reading, as well as the possibility of making people independent and the nation booming; last, combining with the existing classic reading teaching theory and practice, the scientific proposals of classic reading are shown. This thesis is divided into four chapters.Chapter one is the introduction, which includes the research purpose and significance, the research methods and design, and distinction of concepts. Literature review, present situation analysis and research possibility are also presented.Chapter two gives the arguments. It first elaborates Wang Caigui’s education principle of classic reading and the thoughts of modern new Confucianists, and then points out their concern for the future of China. In combination with Lu Xun’s view of "building man", it proposes reading classics by children and even the whole people is beneficial for personal independence, independence of Chinese culture and national development, which can make Chinese people contribute to the world in the future.Chapter three is the retort to skeptics. It sums up a large number of doubts of classic reading and refutes them by using relative pedagogy, psychology, education psychology, neurophysiology and the theory of Marxist Philosophy, proving the reasonability of classic reading teaching and the possibility of making people independent.Chapter four is the further argumentation. With the help of existing classic reading theory and practice, it shows the scientific proposals of classic reading.
