Abstract/Summary:
There are a large number of people with hearing impariment in our country. We should pay great attention to their mental health. Generally, it is believed that people who are deaf are vulnerable to menticide, as they live in an environment lack of auditory stimulus, feedback and communication, and their cognition and personalities are easily impacted by the environment. In the past, researchers studied the mental health and personalities of the hearing impaired with self-report inventories. The problem was that it was difficult for the deaf to read and understand the meanings of the questionnaires, so the applicability of the measuring tools was a great question. To overcome this question, this paper proposes the using of projective tests to diagnose the mental health and personalities of the hearing-impaired middle school students. This article was divided into two studies. The purpose of the first study was to diagnose the symptoms of somatization, compulsion, depression, anxiety, phobia, and paranoia of the hearing-impaired students and the hearing students by the using of the house-tree-person test, and analysed the efficacy of the H-T-P on measuring the hearing-impaired students. The paper also compared the differences on the above six symptoms between the two groups. The research tools were the H-T-P and the the Symptom Checklist 90(SCL-90). The 62 hearing-impaired subjects were from a deaf-mute school in Xi'an and the 68 hearing subjects were from a high school in Xi'an. The analysis of the H-T-P drawings was based on the previous research which collected 43 drawing characterisitics which could reflect the symptoms of somatization, compulsion, depression, anxiety, phobia, and paranoia. The rating of the drawings was carried according to the analytical handbook. The purpose of the second research was to learn more about the personality traits of the hearing impaired students by using the projective tests and compared the differences with the hearing students. The measuring tools were the Group Thematic apperception Test for students (G-TAT). The analysis of the G-TAT was strictly carried according to the analytical manual. The following conclusions are drawn from the two researches:The first one is that H-T-P drawings are valid in the diagnosis of the symptoms of somatization, compulsion, depression, anxiety, phobia, and paranoia of the hearing-impaired students, and it's especially suitable for the hearing-impaired.The second one is that compared with hearing students, hearing-impaired students showed more symptoms on somatization and anxiety reflected on H-T-P, suggesting that more of the following features are shown in hearing-impaired students' drawings: scar(s) on their drawings of the tree stem, blank space on the tree crown, the drawing of the tree crown filled the entire paper, coarse eyebows, no ears , blank space on the body, long necks, tiles on the roof, the roof being painted black, hands behind the body, long arm, and the drawing of the person filled the entire paper. And compared with those hearing students, hard of hearings are less likely to show depression symptoms such as losing interests, decreased engery, depressed, disappointed and autopunition. The following features are less likely to be seen in hard of hearing students' drawings: small gate with a tight feeling, the wall being painted black, plap-like root, carefully portrayed tree crown, carefully portrayed head, mouth opened, hands behind the body, and blank space of the body. The third one is that hearing-impaired students have a very strong desire to be accepted and admitted by the school and the society, and their desire of ascription is also very strong. Also, they require much less independece and are more dependent, submissive. When their desires are not satisfied, they are prone to cope in a passive way. Compared with the hearing students, the hearing-impaired students in the whole think they are well-being, and they have a positive attitude toward life.
