Richard Strauss is one of the outstanding representatives of the late Romantic composers. In his life, he wrote a lot of excellent works, including the tone poem, opera and art songs and many other creative forms. Richard Strauss has created more than 200 works of art songs, which play an important role in his music career. Richard Strauss's early works of art songs inherited and developed the tradition of German and Austrian art songs. Through constant innovation and adventurous reforms, the original exquisite and lyric form of art song was made full of dramatic and powerful style of opera arias, which made the creation of German and Austrian art song climb on a new peak.The first part of this article summarizes the art song's creation before Richard Strauss, and expounded the development process of German and Austrian art songs in the past century. The second part makes a brief review of all Richard Strauss's life. This part describes the main theme of Richard Strauss's creative life by briefly introducing his early life, tone poem, opera and art songs'creation in three periods.The third part describes the characteristics of Richard Strauss'early art songs from three aspects: early art songs'creative background, creative ontological characteristics and ontological analysis of representative works. And this part makes creative ontology analysis of Richard Strauss'early art songs from the late Romantic harmony characteristic, the creative characteristics of accompaniment, the weak beginning of first sentence of the lyrics, and other details.From 5 representatives of his early art song works, the fourth part explores Richard Strauss's performance style, which includes the grasp of lyrics and rhyme, the sound tonal processing and the use of breathing techniques in singing and so on. The author hopes it can provide useful help for posterior vocal learners.The fifth part expatiate the performing characteristics of Richard Strauss'early art songs from four aspects: the accuracy of language, tone changes, the grasp of the speed, and the integration with the piano accompaniment.The epilogue makes a conclusion of Strauss's early art songs'current historical status, and the practical and historical significance in investigating his works.
