| The study of reference has been so long a focus, which is very important for the philosophy of language and linguistics. The problem of reference is elementary a problem between language and the world. After entering the 20th century, the study of reference has stepped into a new stage, in which Russell's theory of description is an important result during that time, though it is criticized by Peter F. Strawson and Saul Kripke. In this paper, we first have a look at the development of the theory of description, paying more attention on the basic thought of description theory, analyzing the developing features of view on description in Modern West. Finally, the author expounds the view of context is the key factor of fixing a description's reference from three aspects of the definition and constitutes of context and its pragmatic meaning of fixing a name's reference. |
