As Russell proposed the Theory of Descriptions to solve three major problems inphilosophy, this paper discusses the main content of the Theory of Descriptions ofRussell from these three major problems. Russell thought that proper names have strictdistinction with descriptions, descriptions can not be the main words of proposition, andthe primary reason forming the problems is people's blurring application of descriptions. So Russell applied logical analysis method, by transforming subject-verb statement withdescriptions into existing statement with propositional function, to solve three majorproblems. But Strawson thought Russell mingle type and the use of type and confuse theimplication with conclusion. Donnellan pointed out that Russell didn't distinguish thereferential use and attributive use, and ignore the importance of context in statement. But I think both of the critics of Russell from the two philosophers are notcomprehensive, and didn't give any solution to the three major problems. So this paperpresents the solutions to the three major problems from pluralistic universe, commoncognitive context and the intent of the speaker.
