| This paper studies the proper name of the modern Chinese. In the western philosophy of language and logic of the academic community, there are many different views of issues on sense and reference of proper names. This paper tends to the view of "proper names both have sense and reference". In order to demonstrate this view, this paper has a more detailed analysis of the semantics of proper names. The meaning of proper names can be divided into two different levels, proper names are not only the symbols used in naming things, but also have close logic links with the reference, thus proper names have certain meanings. The meanings of proper names are expressed by the description word clusters, they feature unlimited number, have differences with the prototype and diachronic changes. The classifications of the description word clusters can be divided into objective situation class, subjective feelings class and additional character class and so on.In the use of proper names, both the reference objects and meanings of proper names can be highlighted. There are marks when the meanings of proper names are highlighted. This article lists two special syntactic forms "quantifier+proper name" and "degree adverb+proper name" which can highlight the meanings of proper names. In the "quantifier+ proper name" structure, quantifier major plays the role of cognitive indefinite reference, pragmatic indefinite reference, generalization and contrasts the proper names. Here the meaning of proper names will change with changes in context, and generally the subjective feeling class of description word cluster is highlighted. In the "degree adverb+proper name" structure, proper names here are generally higher recognition, and the highlighted characteristics of proper names will be changed with the change of the features of the description words. The nuances of features of proper names are further strengthened by degree adverbs. |
