New Progress In The Education Of Counselors

The training of multicultural competency is a new trend for American psychological counselor education, which was expected to promotes the Chinese localization of Western psychological science and takes on special value that consultation practice more effectively adapts to culture diversity in harmonious society.On the basis of plentiful foreign literature collection and analysis, this paper adopts inter-disciplinary analysis method, combines pedagogy with cross-cultural psychology and counseling psychology, and emphatically expounds the concept of multicultural competency of psychological counselor and each item of concrete requirement, and accounts for multicultural competency training plan and Curricular model through case study.The main contents of the paper are five parts as follows, the rising of multicultural competency in psychological counselor education, the meaning of multicultural competency for psychological counselor, multicultural competency training plan development, multicultural competency Curricular model, and some thinking and suggestions.The 1st chapter introduces the background of multicultural competency rising, expounds the culture limitation in psychological counselor training system, which educes the idea of multicultural competency of psychological counselor, from the plight of multi-culture psychological consultation development.The 2nd chapter emphatically expounds the meaning of multicultural competency and each item of concrete requirement, which include counselor awareness of own assumption, values, and basis; understanding the worldview of the culturally different client; and developing appropriate intervention strategies and techniques. Which were measured according to the prevalent theoretical frame of consultation psychology in America, concretely explains the concept of multicultural competency for counselor, and finally clarifies the practical meaning of multicultural competency taking of counselor's self-awareness as an example.The 3rd chapter introduces the development model of two kinds of multicultural competency training plan, namely Pedersen's individualized training plan and Ridely's pyramid pattern.The 4th chapter separately presents two kinds of Curricular pattern aiming at the difficulties in practice teaching.Finally, this paper farther addresses the success and failure of basic idea and training practice of multicultural competency in America, and prudently discusses its use for reference and revelations to counselor education in China.This paper endeavors to, firstly, expound deeply and systemically the meaning of counselor's multicultural competency and training practice for the first time, and secondly, address the complex issue of the localization of psychological science from the professional sight.
