The Research Of Psychological Counselor's Competence Model

Recently, psychological counseling, chosen by more and more people, is developing quickly in China. Because of the low standard of counselor trainee and certification assessment, most of counselors started counseling without any normal and systematic professional trainee, causeed the populace to doubt the competence of them. Then, "psychological counselor's competence" was coming out. Neither oversea nor domestic theorist /clinician systematically studied the necessary competence of professional counselor. We introduce "competence model"from human resourcement to study psychological counselor's competence in a way combined qualitative and quantitative method.The subject was psychological counselor who engaged in social counseling. We chose two groups by relatively rigid performance standard, one group consists of 16 counselors, and the other is 15. First, the interviewee was asked to tell three the most successful and unsuccessful event respectively, which called behavior event interview (BEI), an opening and behavior retrospection technique. Second, we process the recording data which was turned into text by subject analysis and coding. Finally, we constructed the psychological counselor's competence model, which was reliable and valid.According to our research, we get the following conclusions:1. The primary psychological counselor's competence mode consisted of three cluster and ten competence.Core-competence: influenceCharacter: compathy, sincerity, flexibility, controllability, self-confidence and analytical thoughtProfessional capacity: insight/awareness, relationship building and learning.2. The model had significant reliability, CA=82.43%3. The model had significant validity. Five competence was similar to Spencer(1993)'s universal competence model of service provider. The exclusive competence is compathy, sincerity, controllability, learning and relationship building, which showed the specialty of the profession.4. The model was different from theoretic model and foreign model, because the study focused on microcosmic aspect, including professional capacity, character and core-competence.5. The index we used to code was competence frequency, coding standard average level and maximal level, which was reliable. Most of the result accorded to past similar research.
