Seen in the historical perspective of calligraphy, the Yuan dynasty was a significant period in respecting the "ancients" and initiating the future. Judging from the art of calligraphy itself, the calligraphic accomplishment of the Yuan Dynasty is neither comparable to that of the High Tang dynasty nor to that of the Wei and Jin dynasties. As regard the development of calligraphy in the Song dynasty, the art of calligraphy in the Yuan dynasty should advance further in the direction of expressing the artist's emotions in the Song dynasty, however, the trend to "Model on the Jin and Tang dynasties", which emerged in the early Yuan dynasty, branded a return to the "Ancients" on the art of calligraphy of the Yuan dynasty with much unexpected profundity. In view of history development, the returning trend in Yuan dynasty has a historical background. The union in state of Yuan dynasty create a peaceful and stable environment for development of art. The archon make an emphasis to the culture, and also calligraphy. The situation of Zhao Mengpo, a descendant of South Song dynasty, gave a representative example of archon of either Yuan guarding against or regarding Han culture. That above makes an advantage for development of calligraphy in Yuan. Additionally, governor putting importance on LI Xue ideology influences not only Li Xue itself but also calligraphy field. It is a commonplace to contact the trait of calligraphy and personality. So the view of correctitude and keeping peace have a great influence to development of the return of "Model on the Jin and Tang dynasties". In respect of art development, the emphasis of Jin and Tang rule in Yuan dynasty is a advanced development of respecting ancient in South Song, which rooted in South Song, the calligraphy declined. And it is a result of trying to correct malady in the period. In view of phenomenon, it is a betray against calligraphy in North Song, a return to classicalism. And also, it is the development, not the simple repeat. It can not go on wheels as people expected, however, it must give us a place of criticizing and thinking, which is important to the further development.I make an effort to express myself from that view just above. Although immature, it basically reflects my present thought. Just like calligraphy in Yuan, it is a begin of my research for Yuan calligraphy in the thesis. Whether or no, it makes a capacious space for me to study calligraphy.
