Johannes Itten( 1888-1967) is the early proponent for the creation of the basic courses of art design as well as the first chief lecturer of Bauhaus basic courses. From the traditional way of art education which is on the basis of imitation painting, he develops a basic art teaching system, which studies the basic phenomenon of visual art such as form, color, texture, rhythm etc., and develops the students' potential through the methods of experience, feeling and experiment. This system leads to a completely new position for the basic courses of art design, ranging from teaching method, content of curriculum, the role of teachers to the location of study. As a teacher with strong personality, Johannes Itten is controversial in the field of design theory. Starting from Johannes Itten's experimental characteristic of teaching basic courses, this paper systematically studied Johannes Itten's teaching system from the aspects of teaching concept, teaching content and teaching method etc. with the approaches of chronological study, diachronic comparison, summarizing and analysis. This paper also compared and analyzed the diversified trend of the development of foreign countries' basic courses of art design and the problems in China's elementary teaching. With the aim to find the enlightenment to reality from the history, and find the new teaching methods that fit the basic education of art design, the author put forward their own ideas and suggestions.
